Tavyside Health Centre and Lifton Surgery are committed to helping the environment and is something that we as a Practice and our staff are really enthusiastic about.
We first announced our pledge to the environment back in the beginning of 2020 before we were all hit with the COVID-19 pandemic.
We have already started implementing some changes in the way we work and one of the more noticeable changes we made in 2019, was the introduction of accuRx. accuRx is an application which runs within our clinical system and allows staff to send one way text messages to patients informing them of any messages we may have for them or by asking them to call the surgery. By introducing this, we have reduced our paper and postage consumption dramatically. Patients do have the option to opt-out of this, however we would encourage all patients to opt-in, as we can contact you in a much faster and efficient time frame. For patients who do not have a mobile, we will continue to contact you in the traditional method, whether this is by phone call or letter.
NEAR FUTURE CHANGES
Other changes we will be introducing shortly is what we print out for patient's. If you are requesting a copy of your results and are not signed up to GP online services, we will be able to email you or accuRx your results across. When seeing a GP, instead of them giving you print outs, they will instead text you the relevant information. Patients visiting the surgery (post COVID-19) will start to notice more plants throughout the waiting rooms, making for a more relaxing visit and a healthier environment.
We are hoping in the future to obtain more plants for the balconies on the top floor of the Practice. This area is currently vacant and could be used for plantation.
We are also hoping to work with the Pharmacy to increase electronic prescription requests rather than paper requests. This is something that is more timely and will take more thought process to implement.
Another idea which we would like to make is having a vertical garden along the outside of our Practice wall (road side).
GSK Complete the Cycle Scheme
Protecting our environment and safeguarding our future, one inhaler at a time.
73 million respiratory inhalers are prescribed every year in the UK and not disposing of them correctly can be harmful to our environment. Our inhaler recycling and recovery scheme, Complete the Cycle, is the first of its kind for respiratory inhalers in the UK.
Complete the Cycle was set up in the UK in 2011. By the end of 2017, over 1.2 million inhalers have been recycled and recovered. This has saved carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to taking 5,199 cars off UK roads.
By working together with patients, pharmacies and healthcare professionals, we can all help to reduce waste and greenhouse gases, moving towards a more environmentally sustainable treatment of respiratory disease.
In Tavistock, the two Pharmacies currently signed up to this scheme are:
- Boots Chemist
- Morrisons Pharmacy
